5 Ways to Speed Up Recovery Between Workouts

One of the most challenging aspects of your workout may be recovering afterwards. This can sometimes prevent people from keeping up with a regular workout schedule, but, if you employ tactics to recover faster, you can spend more time pursuing your fitness goals.

Eat a Protein-Rich Diet

This is essential to your recovery, particularly if you don't eat before your workout. You should look for foods that are high in protein and get enough protein for your body size. In very general terms, women should eat about 20 grams of protein, while men require up to 50 grams.

Get a Massage

A professional massage is going to help you in a number of ways. First of all, it will help you relax and reduce stress. Often, there will be soft music and scented candles to add to the experience, while the certified masseuse works out the tension in your muscles. As he or she kneads your muscles, excess scar tissue will be broken up, which is a major cause of muscle stiffness.

Soak in a Hot Tub or Spa

Another good treatment is to soak in a hot tub or spa. If you don't have access to a hot tub, a bathtub filled with warm water will suffice. The warm water will dilate the blood vessels, allowing more efficient blood flow throughout the body. This process will help your muscles to relax and ease that post-workout discomfort.

Drink More Water

You're probably not drinking enough water, even if you think otherwise. Water will help the metabolic process and help you rehydrate after an exhausting workout. In addition to helping your body recover, drinking more water will help the different systems in your body function more efficiently, which will help you recover that much faster.

Make Sure You Get Eight Hours of Quality Sleep

This is important under any circumstances, but especially vital to your recovery. You may be resting, while you sleep, but your body is actually working. One important chore it's undertaking is to heal and restore the muscles you used during the day. If you're not getting enough quality sleep at night, it's going to take longer for your body to heal.

No matter what type of sport you pursue, always consult your doctor. He may be able to advise you on how to engage in your workouts more safely and how best to recover from each session. Working out safely can help you achieve the best results, as well.
